NFI wants to use blood flow detection to recognize deepfakes

The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) has developed a method that can recognize manipulated images by artificial intelligence (AI). The deepfakes can be recognized by looking at the heartbeat.

According to the NFI, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recognize fake videos with the naked eye due to the many technological developments. This can have major consequences for society: it is easy to see misleading material as true, for example.

The institute therefore wanted to investigate whether manipulated images can be recognized. By means of blood flow detection, the authenticity of moving images can be determined.

Discoloration in face

"A heartbeat is something that is difficult to imitate," says NFI researcher Zeno Geradts. "With every heartbeat, the small veins under your eyes and in your face swell slightly." According to the researcher, this causes a small color difference in the face. "And we can detect that." The changing blood flow is missing in faces with deepfakes.

The researcher came up with the idea after he came across a publication from the American Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2012. It stated that researchers can measure someone's heart rate through the veins in the face. "I knew right away that we could use this for image detection," says Geradts.

The NFI wants to use the method in criminal cases. "If a murder is committed and there is camera footage of it. If someone says that the footage is not real, we can investigate whether that is the case or not."

Next week, Geradts will present the method in Ireland at a European forensic conference.
